Bait shop sets 25-year record for deer harvest

SPENCER — Judging by the number of killed deer checked in at Spencer Bait and Tackle shop, this was a successful season for Owen County hunters.

Bait shop owner Gene Arnold reported a new 25-year high with a total of 1,140 deer checked in at his business on Ind. 46 near the entrance to McCormick’s Creek State Park.

His previous record was set in 1995, when hunters brought in 1,105 deer for validation. Arnold speculated that fair winter weather in late 2009 resulted in more hunting.

Of this season’s harvest, Arnold said, 812 deer were killed with firearms and the rest by bow and arrow.
