Money coming to repair flood damage on Bottom Road

The Monroe County Long Term Recovery Committee, a program of United Way, has received an additional grant of $187,765 from the Indiana Natural Disaster Fund to help support disaster recovery work from the 2008 storms and floods. These new grant funds will be allocated to the Monroe County Highway Department for infrastructure work on Bottom Road in northern Monroe County.

Bottom Road had devastating erosion in the massive June 2008 flooding. This road connects to Ind. 37, serves approximately 500 residents each day, and is in an environmentally sensitive area. The funding will help stabilize the road and minimize erosion in the future.

Barry Lessow, executive director of United Way of Monroe County, said the fund has provided more than $2.4 million for individuals, families, and nonprofits. He said the additional funding, which will strengthen local infrastructure, is just one example of our the Long Term Recovery Committee’s work to provide support for ongoing recovery cases.

The fund was established through a $45 million statewide disaster relief and recovery grant from Lilly Endowment to the Indiana Association of United Ways in June 2008.

The long-term recovery committee provides support and resources to those still affected by the severe storms and flooding of 2008.
