Take time to prepare for a better hunt
J & R Guide Service Special to Hoosier Times
Deer hunters in Indiana can greatly improve their hunting success with just a little knowledge of their quarry and equipment.
First, hunters should know their firearm or bow thoroughly and also know where it is going to shoot when the trigger is pulled or arrow released. Practice with tree stands and safety harnesses should be done in the backyard at home, not in the woods on the day of hunting. If you are hunting on your own and not with a guide, preseason scouting is a must. Deer will change their locations during the fall and winter to adjust to food sources. Green soybean fields and clover fields would be an early archery season choice.
As the season progresses, deer will start to feed more on acorns and spend a lot of time in standing corn fields. Look for and hunt brushy funnel areas around these food sources to increase your odds.
Be sure to obtain permission to hunt private land before the hunting season begins. Think ahead and make a check list of equipment that will be needed during the hunt such as warm clothing for the weather, hunter orange hat or vest, tree stands, safety harness, knife, rope, ammunition, cell phone for emergencies, water, snacks, first aid kit and animal transport tags.
Know the Indiana deer hunting laws provided by the Department of Natural Resources.
Use a little common sense, and by thinking ahead can make your outdoor adventure fun and safe.
