Big Bear Choppers closing draws attention from county sheriff

Detectives in Southern California are investigating Big Bear Choppers to determine whether charges should be filed against the owners, according to published reports.

Kevin and Mona Alsop, owners of the boutique motorcycle manufacturer, reportedly promised to reopen after closing for Thanksgiving, but the business remains shuttered. Some customers have complained that they made partial or full upfront payments for motorcycles that have not yet been delivered.

On a business TV show called “The Mentor” in November, the couple was shown making calls to customers explaining their financial troubles and asking for more time, promising to fulfill orders.

But customers who paid deposits told the Big Bear Grizzly they still don’t have bikes, or refunds.

Detective Lonnie Siebert of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station told the newspaper the department is consulting with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office, and criminal charges against the Alsops are possible.

Chris Lee of the District Attorney’s office says several potential victims have contacted his office. He urged those with complaints to file a report with the sheriff’s office.

Potential victims reportedly include members of the military deployed in Afghanistan, military members recently discharged, wounded veterans, dealers, and retirees, the newspaper reported.
