Bloomington doc's federal trial delayed to May 2

Monroe County - A Bloomington doctor's trial on federal charges of unlawful drug distribution and health care fraud has been postponed until May 2.

Dr. Kamal Tiwari is charged with health care fraud, health care fraud resulting in serious bodily injury and 11 counts of unlawful drug distribution. An indictment last June says he prescribed narcotics when not medically necessary and defrauded insurers of millions of dollars by performing unnecessary procedures.

The 58-year-old doctor agreed in October to surrender his state medical license pending the outcome of his trial. Defense lawyer Arend Abel has called the accusations "incorrect and not well-founded."

The Herald-Times reported Wednesday that U.S. Judge Sarah Evan Barker recently allowed Tiwari to sell a 2,400-square-foot oceanfront home in Hilton Head, S.C. It's listed for $3.4 million.
