Outdoor events: turkey hunting seminar, archery shoots, hunter education classes, state forest open houses

Turkey hunting seminar
Parker’s Archery will host its 18th annual Turkey Hunting Seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday. Guest speaker will be Preston Crabtree with Primos Game Calls. Door prizes and refreshments will be served. A two-day guided turkey hunt for a youth, provided by Backwater Outlaws Guide Service, will be given away. An Indiana conservation officer will be available for questions. Admission is $5 per person. 2614 E. Ind. 46, Spencer.


Archery shoot
White River Bowhunters will have a 30-target 3-D shoot Saturday. Registration will be at 8 a.m. Range closes at 4 p.m. Call 812-277-0187 or go to www.whiteriverbowhunters.com. The club is off Ind. 37 between Bedford and Mitchell, 4.7 miles south of the Ind. 37 and 50 junction.


Water reservoirs
Visit four former and current water reservoirs for the City of Bloomington: Twin Lakes, Leonard Springs, Griffy Lake and Lake Monroe. The first three are now city parks. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the city of Bloomington Adult Community Center and will return by 4 p.m. After a tour of the reservoirs, participants will peruse the collections of the Monroe County History Center to see how reservoir history has been preserved. Dress for the weather; trip will go rain or shine. Bring a sack lunch. Educational materials, admission to the museum and drinking water will be provided. Cost is $26 per person. Hunter education classes
A hunter education class will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and March 29 at Paynetown State Recreation Area at Lake Monroe. Participants must attend both days of the free class and score at least 70 percent on the written exam to earn a Hunter Education certification, which is needed by anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. Bring a lunch or be prepared to go nearby to purchase lunch both days. Dress for the weather. Preregister by calling 812-837-9546.

Another free hunter education class will be 8 a.m.-3 p.m. April 4 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. April 5 at the Monroe Lodge 22, 4160 S. Walnut Street Pike, Bloomington. Call Tracy at 812-391-0043 for reservations and questions.

White River Bowhunters will sponsor a hunter education class 5:30-8 p.m. April 10 and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. April 11. Participants must attend both days; preregistration is required. Contact Harold Gregory at 812-277-0187 or go to www.whiteriverbowhunters.com.


State forest open houses
The DNR Division of Forestry will host a series of open houses with displays about recreational activities, budget issues, staffing, major projects, the DNR forestry strategic plan, invasive species and forest management. Light refreshments will be served.

FrogWatch workshop

Garlic mustard pull
The Nature Conservancy will host a garlic mustard pull at 1 p.m. April 9 at the Selma Steele Nature Preserve in Brown County. Bring gloves and water and wear sturdy footwear. T.C. Steele Historic Site is south of Belmont off Ind. 46. Participants will meet at the IGA in Nashville at 1 p.m. to carpool to the preserve. Wildflower weekend

Archery shoot
Bloomington Archery Club will have a 3-D shoot April 18. Sign-up is 8 a.m.-11 a.m. The club is on May Road just off of Rockport Road west of Bloomington and Ind. 37. Wildlife steward training
The Indiana Wildlife Federation and the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a wildlife steward training program 6-9 p.m. six Tuesdays March 31 through May 5 at the Brown County Public Library. Volunteers are needed to assist creating more wildlife friendly areas for wildlife and people. Workshop focus will be on birds, butterflies, mammals, amphibians, native plants and landscaping for wildlife. There will be one Saturday morning session on April 18. Cost is $45 and includes materials, manuals and snacks. To become certified as a wildlife steward, attendees will be asked to help others with their wildlife needs. Photo contest
The fifth annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest will be open until April 15. Each photographer may submit up to three photos. Each image should be identified with name, location and description of the subject. Entries must also include a photographer’s name and contact information. For contest requirements and an entry form, see dnr.in.gov/historic. As an added incentive for students, the school class with the most participants will get a free tour of the Indiana Statehouse and Monument Circle in Indianapolis. Winning images will be printed in Preserving Indiana, the Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology’s newsletter, and placed on the division’s Web site. Photos will be displayed in the Indiana Statehouse, the Indianapolis Artsgarden and the Indiana University-Southeast Library in New Albany in May.


Trail work
The Hoosier Back Country Horsemen and U.S. Forest Service officials have set work dates and projects for the Hoosier National Forest. Trail work days will be May 5, June 27, July 18 and Sept. 26. Participants will be putting in a new trail in the Hickory Ridge Trail System this summer. History fest
The Lawrence County History Fest will be April 18-19 at Murray Park in Bedford. There will be encampments, drills and demonstrations of military from the Revolutionary War through World War II. There will also be food, battles, wild West shoot-outs and Native American games. At 11 a.m. will be a Cowboy Bob Chuckwagon theater show.
