Campfire ban issued at Hoosier National Forest

Bedford - Federal authorities have issued a ban on campfires at Hoosier National Forest amid a drought in southern Indiana.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky. reports the ban announced Monday also sets new restrictions on smoking, allowing it only in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or certain cleared areas.

State climatologist Dev Niyogi says southern Indiana is in the midst of a moderate to severe drought.

The Hoosier National Forest fire ban is expected to remain in effect until conditions significantly improve.
