Indiana directs flag-lowering for 9/11 anniversary

Indianapolis (AP) - Gov. Mitch Daniels has asked Indiana's cities and towns to lower their flags to half-staff Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The governor's request issued Thursday is in accordance with a directive from President Barack Obama calling for the nation to honor what's now called Patriot Day.

Obama's directive also includes a call for Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EDT - the time when the first hijacked jet slammed into the World Trade Center.

The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania killed nearly 3,000 people and launched the two U.S. wars against terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq.
